TOP GAMES OF 2014!

This year has been an odd one for gaming (for me at least.) Usually I'm skipping around from game, to game, to game with so many different stories to embark on. But with the lack of creative titles this year, I've immersed myself in games like TitanFall, Destiny and GTAV: Online that just have over all fun multiplayer game play.

I just received a Wii U this Christmas, so I hope this brings more fun and creativity to my personal gaming realm. I've only had my hands on Smash Bros. for a short bit, but I can already feel the intensity I once felt with my last Nintendo console growing inside once again! I also look forward to some great PC titles in 2015, as I am really opening up my Steam collection these days.

1. TitanFall (Xbox One)
2. Super Smash Bros. (WiiU)
3. INfamous: Second Son (PS4)
4. The Evil Within (PS4)
5. Destiny (XBox One)
6. South Park: The Stick of Truth (XBox 360)
7. Alien: Isolation (PC)
8. Costume Quest 2 (PC)
9. Grand Theft Auto V (XBox One)
10. Wolf Among Us (PC)

TitanFall takes the cake for infusing me with the ultimate mech fantasy this year! Nothing beats jumping from roof top, to rooftop, onto your mech, just in time to rip off another mechs arms and beat him with them. Second Son was my favorite most "over all polished game" this year. I had zero complaints with it and enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would.
Sadly I did not get around to playing Sunset Overdrive, Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor, Dragon Age: Inquisition or Mario Kart 8, but you better believe they are on the radar when the sales next year hit!

BONUS:

Honorable Mention goes to Playstations playable trailer  P.T. for being one of the most realistic and terrifying horror gaming experiences I have ever had. I think I am looking forward to Silent Hills more than any other game in 2015!

TOP FILMS OF 2014!

I do these every year. If you'd like to hear my top horror pics of 2014 tune into Decembers episode of the podcast. I rate these by how enjoyable the films were. I also take in repayable value. Meaning, I enjoyed Interstellar, Tusk and Gone Girl...But it don't think I'll watch them multiple times.

2014 really wasn't the best for the cinemas. But a few golden eggs popped out of that old hen called Hollywood. Just think, 2015 brings major films Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: Episode VII! I'm cooling myself off like a southern belle in church right now just thinking about them. For now, the best of 2014!

Best Films of 2014

1. Big Hero 6
2.Grand Budapest Hotel
3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
5. X-Men: Days of Future Past
6. Nightcrawler
7. The Babadook
8. Under the Skin
9. Godzilla
10. The Interview

Worst Films of 2014

1.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2. Let's Be Cops
3. 300: Rise of an Empire
4. Noah
5. Nurse 3D
6. Willow Creek
7. I, Frankenstein
8. Cabin Fever: Patent Zero
9. Oculus
10. Bad Words

Yes, I still need to see Boyhood, Whiplash and Birdman. Also Dumb and Dumber To was not a fond trip down memory lane. More like watching your drunk uncle tell the same story again at the dinner table.

Over 140 Characters On Life

I am so perplexed by this planet and the two legged creatures that inhabit it. Between the way your united states of america is run, along with how humans deal with life's daily obstacles as if it's their last day on earth truly sickens me. I used to be such a front man, but these days, all I want to do is just sit back and watch the world burn. ‪#‎whileIphotographandsketchitout‬

Now Playing: Kevin Smith's TUSK

I'm not sure if it's just because I've been doing podcasts for about eight years or what? But I really enjoyed this flick! Every one I've talked with who's seen this did not like it at all. Goes to show you shouldn't listen to critics.

Also do yourself a favor and stay off the internet about this one. A lot of its charm comes from the mystery behind it. Looking up pictures and info may kill it for a lot of people out there.

Goodbye my pup

My dog Bradley passed away last night. He was a lovable golden retriever who loved to swim and play. He lived for these two things like there was no tomorrow. He would play fetch until YOU gave. During his last days he swam in the pool and was outside relaxing. Most inside dogs wished they were so lucky. Before I moved out, I always wanted Bradley to be my bedside dog. He honestly was too cool for that and had to many places to roam at night.

He was my moms best friend and kept her company after I moved out. Right now things are hard for her but she has my father and friends to help her through this time including myself and Emily.

I'm using this picture from Thanksgiving a few years ago to remind me of how damn funny Bradley was. Wet from the pool, begging for turkey. I'll always remember the good times with him and in the end that's all that really matters.

I'll miss ya buddy.

Hey! Orion Pictures is back!

"Orion Pictures is alive again. The mini-major studio and distributor behind The Terminator, RoboCop and Best Picture Oscar winners Amadeus, Platoon, Dances With Wolves and The Silence Of The Lambs was acquired by MGM in 1997 after flailing financially through most of the 1980s and ’90s, but it fell off the map within a few short years. Now MGM quietly is positioning Orion Pictures as a specialty multiplatform distribution arm, starting with the October release of horror sequelThe Town That Dreaded Sundown." -Deadline.com

Joan Rivers (1933 – 2014)

Man, I'm really bummed about all these celebrity deaths this summer.

Joan Rivers is officially gone. This saddens me dearly. A lot of people only knew her as that old woman with a ton of plastic surgery on the red carpet. But she was so much more then that! She was one hell of a stand up comic, and was one of the first woman to really knock the pants off of some of the well known male comics with a smile. She launched The Late Show where she (like most comics) poked a lot of fun at herself and did till the day she passed.

One thing I will always respect about her is that she always tried to stay current and push towards the future. Not scoff at everything and be and angry old bitty.

Here is one of my favorite recent moments of Joan's. She interviewed Eric Andre on her web show "In Bed with Joan." Eric's a very "different" and at times, vulgar comic that Joan opens her arms wide to and enjoys every minute of. Every time I think of it, it puts a smile on my face.

We'll all miss ya, ya old bag!

Fargo (FX Series)

I'm happy to hear Fargo took home the Emmy for best miniseries. I just finished the last episode, and it was perfect! From the moment I started the series, till just now. I was constantly glued to the television!

Having a full cast of comedians play (some what) serious rolls is a smart move on the creators part. It fit the tone well and you never knew what was coming next. Fargo keeps the same feel of the Coen brothers film, while at the same time delving into its own world and pulling out a completely new story involving some great original characters. I'm definitely going to keep a look out for more of Noah Hawley future work.

I'm very interested in season 2 now. So far all I know is that it will be primarily set in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1979, with some of the story taking place in Luverne, MN. A new actor will play the younger version of Lou Solverson at age 33, newly back in the States from Vietnam. (a story that was briefly touched upon during the first season)

Do yourself a favor and check out Fargo when it lands on bluray and dvd October 14th.

R.I.P. True Blood

I stuck with True Blood for seven seasons. Seven seasons and I feel as if none of the episodes were quite as awful as that finale. From the direction, to the acting, to writing... Everything felt half assed. I will admit, I had fun with True Blood. But this series was definitely not perfect by any means.

Also for a vampire series, it was at least a better representative of the White Wolf series in comparison to say, Kindred: The Embraced.

PS: What was up with Tara's over dubbed kid voice?!

My encounter with the Smallest Woman in the World

Years ago I met American Horror Story: Freak Shows newest cast member Jyoti Amge, the worlds smallest woman. And It was pretty awkward.

I paid the man out front $1 to go in with me and my date. I completely thought there would be a show on inside and a few others behind the current. What we saw was Jyoti sitting Indian style on a small stool, typing away at her phone and checking social media. She looked up at us. We looked down at her....paused for two seconds....and then walked right back out.

I wasn't sure if I felt...

A) Dirty as human being
B) Cheated out of ah buck.
C) Bummed because cell phones have (once again) officially ruined all things fun in my life. Including freakshows!

The Struggles of Robin Williams (1951-2014)

I have not said much about the passing of Robin Williams. There is just so much grief going on all over the net. And you know what? That is actually great to see! I love knowing that Robin has touched so many lives through his acting career. Someone mentioned that they have not seen this many touched by a persons loss since even before Michael Jackson's death.

Through the lens, we could tell Robin was definitely a sweet and caring man. Full of laughter and joy. His specials Live at the Roxy, An Evening with Robin Williams and Self Destruction made me burst with laughter! I can't say they got me through hard times, but I'm sure they did in some way or another. As a child growing up in the 80's and 90's, I adored his classics. He was the voice of laughter to me and my parents and I will always cherish that.

But what about the darker side? Robin made folks laugh for years and years and wanted to push himself even further. In 2002 we saw a whole new side of Williams with one single film. One Hour Photo.

The film was based around the man at the local photo hut. How he sees everything about your life through photos. We never knew who that man was or what they did on their down time. But we just handed over our lives in a tiny canister. The film also showed how loneliness can really get to a person. How it slowly eats away at people on the inside looking out.

Going through social media I've noticed not one person has mentioned this film in Robin's larger than life legacy. I really feel we got to see a brief glimpse at the man inside. Now, I'm not saying Robin was a horrific creep like his roll in the picture. Far from it! But there is always that underlining to a person. Something that one grasps to and really takes with him or her. This was that roll for Mr. Williams.
I think he really enjoyed playing something different, something dark while keeping face to the common crowd. He pushed himself at the same time he let go and pulled off something brilliant that is rarely ever seen in cinema.

I am constantly asked "Why do you like horror movies? You are such a nice guy! How can you like scary things?" The answer is quite simple. I read somewhere that inside all of us there are monsters that we need to tame, or that we fight. Under the facade, we all have our own demons to battle. Monsters and mad men remind us that there is real evil in this world. There's darkness inside all of us. It's good to be reminded of that from time to time. And the darkness, monsters and demons can all be conquered -- just like in the horror pictures.

I really feel Robin gave himself to that theory and opened up to it in this picture and gave one hell of a performance! Sadly for Mr. Williams, in the end, he could not conquer his demons. I feel we will never truly know what was going through his mind on August 11th 2014. But we all need to be aware that loneliness and depression lies within us all. Even the really funny and nice ones. The ones that make you laugh hysterically at lunch or at the bar. The ones who stay positive through it all. Facades can be strong, but the human emotion inside is much, much stronger.

Someone said today that they now think Robin was a coward for leaving us the way he did, and that his legacy means nothing to them anymore. That is truly heart breaking and depressing to hear.

I don't want to leave this post on a down note. So I'm going to leave you with my favorite memory of Robin Williams. One that I think will stick with me till my death bed, and hopefully yours. This video shows how truly loving and caring Robin was. Just because he needed to fight his own demons off inside does not mean he wasn't a truly generous and caring person all around. We'll all deeply miss you Robbie.

Oculus (2013)

Oculus was simply an "okay" picture. I'll give Mike Flanagan credit for not relying on too many jump scares. Though, I am happy to say the overall looming presence of evil is what makes this 2013 haunted thriller feel truly terrifying. Oculus's problem was that it didn't expand more on it's own mythology and leaves you in the dark bummed and confused.

*Minor spoilers*
...
..
.
..
...
Don't get me wrong, I love a good "downer ending" (The Mist,) but this one almost feels forced with no real pay off. I felt cheated towards the end, left with this message. "The mirror is evil, has been evil, and will continue to be evil in hopefully more sequels."

Maybe the short feels a tad more grounded?

Every Day is Halloween: Episode 2 with Kenny Caperton

It's August and Halloween is quickly on our heels. But Comic-Con International is now! Legendary Pictures announces more monsters, Ash is back to fight more deadites, Scream Factory has a slew of new releases; the list just goes on and on.

My guest this month is Kenny Caperton. Kenny owns a replica home based off Michael Myers humble abode from John Carpenter's classic Halloween. I catch up with Kenny and ask him what it's like to live in the iconic horror home as well as see how his new film Honey Spider is doing.

I also take a look at Scream Facory's re-release of Motel Hell and make sure to listen carefully to see how you can win a creepy item signed by William Shatner himself!

Monsters of the Gridiron

I really enjoy collecting things from my childhood that I feel were really crucial to the development of who I am today.

As a child growing up in Orlando in the early 90's was a fun and fascinating time. Especially for the kids who were into MONSTERS! Universal Orlando started up their annual Halloween event; Halloween Horror Nights (Fright Nights circa 1991.) My parents dragged me to the very first event when I was six and I was terrified! But I fell in love all at the same time. I remember coming back home and playing "Fright Nights" with the neighbor kids next door.

Around this time Universal was teaming up with other other brands to promote their event. One of them happened to be Coke, and Coca-Cola was the head sponsor of the NFL at that time. In October of 1993 they released a series of football cards called 'Monsters of the Gridiron.' This was a series of football cards that showed off players more "monstrous" sides. Players decked out like The Wolfman, a giant serpent, a specter, etc.

They were pretty cheesy, but if you know me, they were right up my ally! I remember only owning about 7 or 8 cards and a few were doubles but I remember Halloween of '93 as if it was yesterday. Trading monster cards next door with my friends and watching ads for Fright Nights. Also FOX just started up their station and were hamming it up for Halloween with a ton of this commercials. So the ads ran almost every night.

Well a friend of mine brought Monsters of the Gridiron up the other day and nostalgia hit me like a linebacker with bolts in his neck! I had to see if the cards were on Ebay.
I'm proud to say I just won the whole set for a whopping four dollars!

This was all a great trip down memory lane and I am happy to share some of the (outrageously cheesy) marketing campaign ads they ran for Monsters of the Gridiron right here. Enjoy!

Welcome TO HELL Cuphead!

You should all know by now I am a sucker for vintage animation. Especially ones centered around spooky concepts. Well Studio MDHR is bringing all this and more to the XBox One and Steam this year! Cuphead is a 2D run and gun gaming platformer that is pulling out all the stops. Yes, it is all hand drawn on cells to give it that perfect vintage animation feel. Honestly I can't even remember the last time something was drawn on cells these days! It's also multiplayer which I'm sure will create hours off hilarious fun.

I'm already calling it. This will be my indie game of the year. Your move Costume Quest 2!

Once again the Xbox One steals the show again for me, proving once again it is the system that has the most games that I want to play.

Though Sony really stepped up their game at this years E3. I am on pins a needles in anticipation for The Order 1886! BloodBorne also looks like a lot of fun! I also like the idea of playing Farcry 4 with friends without even needing to buy the game (I was only into Blood Dragon.)

As for Nintendo; they stole the show. It was by far the best presentation. I may actually buy a Nintendo WiiU for The Legends of Zelda. An open world Skyrim type game set in the Zelda universe? "Just when I think I'm done, they pulllll me back in."

I must say that the independent games really wowed me this year as well! With games like Inside, Valiant Hearts, Ori, Night in the Woods and Costume Quest 2...who needs big budget games?

Below are a few videos from my top anticipated games. I hope you all enjoy and I hope to play with you guys real soon! I'm off to play some Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX+ Alpha!!!

Here Comes the Devil

Not hopping aboard the hype train on this one folks. If the US remakes it (which you know we will), I think it may have a weeeee bit of potential. But the over all film itself is a jumbled up mess. I like to call this film "Worst Parents Ever: THE MOVIE!"

A Night in the Woods (review)

I review films all the time for Bloody Disgusting's News from the Crypt. So many I sometimes forget what the hell I've seen. (radio, what a business!) I'm here on my blog ready to rectify that!
Here is one of just the many new releases hitting store shelves and probably your Netflix instant queue soon.

Shaky cam haters STAY AWAY! This picture makes The Blair Witch Project look like it was filmed by the most steady of hands.

A Night in the Woods is a story about three not so close friends going on a hiking trip. Sexual tensions and strained relationships come to a head. Paranoia reaches its peak all while much darker forces start rearing their eerie yet, plot hole'ish heads.

If you want to watch a couples relationship go down the tubes for 82 minutes, be my guest. The only thing scary about this movie was the fact that the main character had to film everything. I mean everything! I get the film has to tell the story through this plot device. But it is so forced down your throat that by the end of this movie, you would not be surprised if the lead pulled a camera right out his unmentionable.

Reading "From the makers of Bronson & Monsters" had me a bit excited because I loved Monsters! But when I took a closer look using my friend the internet...I found that the two guys who helped produce Monsters helped produce this with the star from Monsters. So the tag should really read "From the guys who gave Gareth Edwards money to make Monsters."

In the end Monsters is not completely awful. In fact the locations the crew shot at looked beautiful! The cameras they used really made this movie look wonderful on bluray! At times these gorgeous shots just dragged though. Probably so we could escape the constant nagging and whining from our three stars.

Viewer beware, for this movie may leave you cursing during the films final stretch.

I'm giving "A Night in the Woods" 1 skull out of 5. AWFUL. I'll stick with the Cabin in the Woods thank you very much.
